With today’s wireless speakers offering fewer compromises than ever, there’s never been a better time to buy one—especially when it’s summer.
Here are eight options to consider whether you’re looking for a high-end speaker to fill your patio with great sound or a rugged and ultra-portable unit that you can take with you anywhere.
UE Roll 2
Amazon | $68
Just about any of Ultimate Ears’ wireless speakers are a good bet if you’re looking for great sound and a well-designed product, but the Roll 2 is a standout if portability and durability are a top concerns. It’s rugged, waterproof, small, and lightweight without sacrificing sound or battery life (a promised nine hours on a charge). An additional small but stretchy bungee cord on the back also makes it easy to attach to just about anything.
Bose SoundLink Revolve+
Amazon | $300
At $300 (or more with the optional charging cradle), Bose’s SoundLink Revolve+ certainly isn’t one of the more budget-minded Bluetooth speakers around, but it won’t disappoint if you’re looking to get the best sound you can in a portable package. While a bit bigger and heavier than some other options, you’ll get an ample 16 hours of battery life and a full 360 degrees of sound from the cylindrical speaker as well as plenty of well-thought-out smaller details like a threaded tripod mount on the bottom.
Amazon | $33
It wasn’t long ago that cheap Bluetooth speakers meant a big trade-off in sound quality, but you can now get surprisingly good audio from some of the more affordable options available. The DOSS Touch is a consistently well-reviewed speaker among Amazon customers and also a top budget pick of The Wirecutter, which praised its big sound and better build quality than its price would suggest.
B&O Play Beoplay A1
Amazon | $233
If you’re looking for high-end sound from a speaker even more portable than something like Bose’s SoundLInk Revolve+, the Beoplay A1 from Bang & Olufsen may be just what you’re after. While it’s a mono speaker (you can pair two of them for stereo sound), PCMag found that it delivered “probably the most accurate, powerful bass response” they’ve heard in a Bluetooth speaker. B&O also promises an impressive 24 hours of battery life at normal volume levels.
JBL Flip 4
Amazon | $100
JBL’s Flip line of Bluetooth speakers have long been a favorite of many, and its latest Flip 4 is no exception. CNET found that it improved on the Flip 3 more or less across the board, including better sound, battery life, and waterproofing. The speaker’s all-fabric enclosure (available in seven different colors) also makes it easy to grip and adds a layer of durability as well. If you’re looking to save a bit, however, the Flip 3 is also available for $25 cheaper.
Cambridge SoundWorks OontZ Angle 3
Amazon | $28
Sound quality can vary widely when it comes to really inexpensive Bluetooth speakers, but there’s quite a few that deliver real value for the money. Cambridge SoundWorks’ OontZ Angle 3 is a favorite among Amazon customers, which have rated it four and a half stars after more than 18,000 customer reviews. It’s both splash-resistant and sandproof (but not fully waterproof), so you don’t have to worry about using it around the pool or the beach. It has a built-in mic, so you can use it as a speakerphone.
Amazon | $100
If you’re looking for more than just music and speakerphone capabilities from your Bluetooth speaker, there’s always Amazon’s more portable Alexa-enabled option, the Amazon Tap. That convenience does come with a few trade-offs you should keep in mind, however. The Tap isn’t waterproof, for one, and, as reviews from Wired, PCMag and others note, you can get considerably better sound quality for the same price from a number of other less-smart speakers.
AmazonBasics Shockproof and Waterproof Bluetooth Wireless Mini Speaker
Amazon | $19
There’s a number of different AmazonBasics wireless speakers that are all decent budget-minded choices, but this one’s worth a look if you want one that’s both tough and really portable. It has a rubberized exterior that’ll protect it from drops, and Amazon says it’s waterproof enough to be used as a shower speaker. An included carabiner clip adds a bit more versatility, and you’ll get a decent 12 hours of battery life on a single charge.
